AbstractChanges in land surface properties, often associated with changing vegetation and soil characteristics, have dramatic effects on the weather and the climate simulated either by general circulation models or by regional models. A change in the vegetation type and/or properties of an area may be due to natural climatic variations, or may also be due to anthropogenic causes, such as deforestation or agricultural practices. Due to the importance of the interactions of the atmosphere with the underlying land surfaces, parameterizations of vegetation and soil processes have progressively become more sophisticated over the years, in order to treat the complexities of the physical system. This is reflected in the Soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer (SVAT) schemes employed in GCMs, mesoscale, and small-scale atmospheric numerical models. Despite the detailed description of the interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere used in the SVATs, the inadequate or insufficient representation of the conditions and the processes of the land surface can provoke a negative impact on the climate and weather predictions, affecting their reliability. So, efforts have been made to get a more realistic representation of the vegetation. In this context, the objective of this work is to generate updated maps of vegetation cover including changes in land use of the Northeast Brazil region, to be used in meteorological modeling. Landsat 7 TM mosaic data and digital vegetation maps of states of the region, published by project RADAMBRASIL (1:1.000.000 scale), were used. These data have been integrated into a classification system for compatibility with the types of vegetation determined by the Simplified Simple Biosfere SSiB surface model, generating a thematic map. For the classification of the mosaic a mixed procedure combining methods of segmentation and classification, visual interpretation and re-sampling of pixels was used. Thus, maps of the vegetation cover of six states of the Northeast region, at 1 Km resolution, with six thematic classes, were obtained. These maps will be aggregated with the ones under development for the other states of Northeast Brazil, for use in regional climate simulation. As a result, considerable improvement of the seasonal climate forecast is expected.
